The ride in was unpleasent, to say the least, for the might man. Traveling from the south to the north was like crossing wetlands filled with insects and worse, humidity. It clung to him like shit to a peasent, and it was making him smell just as bad as one of them. To be fair to the peasents, Sima Mao was far worse than any of them. He was bandit, pirate, and mercenary whose primary motivation was money. Arvice was always a hard thing to be loyal to, as others tended to be loyal to it as well and wish you have your stuff. As such he decided that maybe it was time to be rid of such things for the temporary, and align himself with someone who desires something more than wealth.
It was why he was on this frakken road in the first place, to join a man who had pledge his life for the Han. Though in Mao's case, it was because he was the closest Lord with any chance of success in the coming years. Liu Bei, Liu Yan, and Sun Ce were the next closest, and should Liu Biao refuse him, he would venture off to one of those three. Yet he was almost certain the man did not want to turn away any able bodied officers, and even though Sima Mao held no official title, he was a man to be repected, if for his immense size if nothing else.
As he rode through the city, he noticed many of the peasent class seemed generally happy to be there. They talked and laughed among themselves, even as they worked, and trade with the various merchents around. Trade was good, trade ment money, and money ment that they could hire troops and gather power. Yet as he walked, many of those smiles turned to concerned glances at the six foot five inches man. They noticed the large halberds that rested on his back, and most were unsure how to take him. So they made sure they kept their distance from the rider, and many more made sure to keep their distance from the man-eating horse that he rode on. It was as black as night, yet it's mane and tail were that of a hayish color. It's size dwarfed many of the horses around it, both that of the guards and even more so of the peasents and merchants. Yet it needed to be large to be able to carry it's owner.
As Mao came close to the castle, he dismounted, swinging off his horse in such an acrobatic that would impress anyone, given his stature. A stablehand approached to take the horse, and his knees were visably shaking. Mao's own hand was the size of the kid's head, and crushing it would be relatively simple. Of course, that would also not go over well the man he was coming to serve. He looked back over his shoulder, to see if others would be following in after him, as he had expected one to have arrived here already and another to arrive after him. He shrugged his shoulders and moved up to the guards. "I am here to meet with Governor Liu Biao, I am Sima Mao and have come to offer my services to the man." His voice was harsh, scratchy, a deep. It sounded close to someone grinding two stones against one another, but were doing it at the bottom of a deep well.
They nodded their heads, perhaps fearful of saying anything that might upset the goliath. Instead they swung the doors open and summoned over a page boy and after a few words that were exchanged, the boy started off toward the council chamber, with Mao following behind. The place itself was some what more prettier inside than the streets outside, but then again, that was to be expected. As he walked along, they both came to a large set of doors that were drapped in a light blue, tealish, color. And as the messenger slipped through the doors, Sima Mao waited outside, his weapon still on his back, but there were several guards that were stationed right around him, and each hand a hand on their weapons. Mao himself chuckled and crossed his arms across his chest.

"Holy hell you took your time getting here," a voice from behind the guards suddenly spoke, causing many of them to jump involuntarily and spin around to address the new presence, "Did you finally kill that poor horse of yours? I'm surprised it's legs don't just break through the ground the moment you get on it." One of the guards had drawn his sword, apparently disturbed that this man had startled him from behind without him knowing he was there.
As the guard stepped forward, Darkstar turned his head to look the guard directly in the eyes, "Excuse me? Put that thing away I'm having a conversation with a friend". The Darkstar was wearing a very soft and intricately detailed, black and white silk shirt, with pants to match. His shoes were nothing more than sandals, which seemed to the guard as, Darkstar stepped past him to stand next to Sima Mao, to be suspiciously devoid of the sound of footfall. He suspected that the bottom of the shoes were probably padded with soft leather or cloth. The guards sized the man up and down, noting his weapons: Longsword on the left hip, quiver over the right shoulder accompanied by a longbow which seemed almost as long as the already tall man himself, who seemed a dwarf next to the giant who arrived first.
The Darkstar suddenly looked around the nearby hallways as though he had forgotten something, "Weren't we counting on a third being here?" he said, turning back to the Mountain standing next to him, "Probably already inside trying to find a way to place himself in a position of higher power than either of us, no doubt."
"Guard," he said, as though addressing a servant, "If you wouldn't mind showing us to your lord already, I find I have very little patience this afternoon."

It was curious that shortly after making his mind up to stand against the chaos and rebels that plague the empire that so many brave warriors turn up on his door. He was almost tempted to call it fate but now he was really starting to believe he could do it, he would be to restore the Han empire greater than i had ever been. There was no doubt in his mind now that was making the right choice. Some might whisper that he lacked the talents of men like Liu Bei and Cao Cao but in the coming days, weeks and months he intended to silence such rumors with strong actions. Hesitation and inaction lead only to the deaths or more innocents and he propagation of chaos across the land like a dark tide. He would not allow it, not in his lands not anywhere those that would stirr the people for there own gains would be defeated by his hand and those that would follow him for Justice and Order.
He stepped back sitting back down on his high throne having warmly greeted Gan Ning, Shen Fei and Gao Shun into his forces. His rank of commanding officers was swelling although he would need more such people. If he was to restore order he would meet and welcome every talent of the land to serve him. Anyone no matter there past deserved a second chance to prove there worth by fighting against the rebels to restore the Han dynasty. He was soon snapped out of this line of thought as his court herald approached.
"My lord, a Sima Mao and his friend would request an audience with you at your convenience." the court herald stated loudly before stepping back bowing. Liu Biao took that to meant that they were waiting outside for his guards to allow them inside well, he could see no point keeping them waiting. He might be having a busy day but he was always eager to meet more talented people, even so in these troubled time. He made a gesture with his hand and the guards threw open the grand doors to allow them both entrance. None of the guards dared ask them to disarm, the other officers inside all seemed to be armed anyway. Liu Biao smiled seeing they both had the look of great warriors, in fact he been told tales of the bandit Sima Mao. Well he had already welcomed such a man today in Gan Ning, perhaps they even knew each other.
"Welcome to my court, I am Liu Biao governor of Jing Zhou. I rule here in the name of the Han. Tell me what brings you here gentlemen?" Liu Biao said his voice calm but strong as his eyes flicked from one man to the other. He was not sure quite what to make of them one of then was even taller than he and he was a tall man by any standard.

Glaring down at Darkstar, Sima Mao allowed a light smile to play across his face. The man had on more than one occasion fought against him, and he had two scars to prove it. He did not really care one way or another about the man's company, but in the end, it was amusing to have him around. Aligning along side him had also happened quite a few times over the past years, and they, along with the third man, had proved a formiable team. Yet even now, it was impossible to fight against the staggering odds that were slowly arranging around them. Who now wanted their deaths? "Ha! I find it funny that you would even waste your time to insult me, Star, for I find your wit lacking. Though your tastes in clothing seems flashier than your words." His laugh was a boom, and seemed like the explosion of a firework, rather than human.
The door opened to allow the smaller messenger through, he whispered to the guards who proceeded to open the doors. Sima Mao turned to regard the boy that had entered the hall and who had previously showed him in. "Governor Liu Biao will see you know, show him the proper respect that is due him and the Han." The guard spoke in a crisp voice, yet it carried somewhat of a degree of hesitence. Sima Mao simply shrugged at the words, to continue his move foreword. He had no doubt that Darkstar would be right on his heels, perhaps trying to blend in with his surroundings so that he himself could size up Liu Biao.
It was a sight to behold, the room that the entered, filled with gold and marble. Yet neither things greatly swayed the Butcher one way or another, for gold was easy to come by as a bandit, but it did not bespeak of the quality of a leader, only his pockets. In the current situation, though, Sima Mao had come to find out how good or great a leader this Liu Biao even was. He had served under various bandits and chieftens in the past, and himself had led groups into battle. He bowed at the waist, and it looked as though a mountain was falling over. Upon righting himself, he spoke. "Governor Liu Biao, leader of Xiangyang. I am Sima Mao, a man of humble origins, and a brutal upbringing. I come before you to offer my services to your leadership, but I must ask the question of why I should? What makes you any better than the hundreds of other Warlords out there? What are your claims and motivations?" He tried to make the words sound more intelligent than they actually were, and in truth, Mao was not certain what he wanted for an answer. He looked down at Darkstar and any othe various officers, before turning back to Liu Biao.

Liu Biao took a moment to consider the words of Sima Mao before he said anything for one it gave him a slight dramatic pause a habit he a got into after having made too many official speeches. He smiled for another it gave him a chance to let the man know what he was really about, if he man refused him after learning that truth then he was not a man Liu Biao would want in his services anyway.
"I am glad you have asked me that Sima Mao. If i was indeed like so many of the other looks i bow bow before you now and ask you to end my life. To do otherwise would mark me as a hypocrite. However i am not like those......Traitor." His voice shock at little this time as he pounced the last sentence emotion swelling his throat a little. It was clear he meant every word he was or he was an amazing actor.
"I admit like every other lord i am readying my forces and preparing to take part in the war we all see brewing across the land. In that i am alike with the other warlords how it is intention that makes me different." He took a second to decided how best to explain this was not a speech he had rehearsed it came straight from how he felt.
"I cannot sit back and watch the other lords overthrow the Han empire which has cared for the people for over 400 years. I cannot watch as the land and people are thrown into chaos and disorder. I intend to defeat the rebels and traitors that clog the courts and attack loyal Han officials, i intend to bring order and law back to the land. My goal is to protect the people of this land for without them the land itself means nothing." Liu Biao said finishing unable to say anything else. He had already began by taking in refuges displaced from other waring cites by offering to help them build a place to stay in Jing Zhou and food until they can grow there own.

Watching as the Governor spoke, Mao shook his head as he listened. Liu Biao showed emotion as he spoke, and while he knew it was displaying a sort of weakness in the man, it also showed passion for what he believed in. And passion was a hard thing to come by these days, for greed and the desire for power were not the same as the passion this man had to right the wrongs done in China. Yet Mao could not help but wonder to himself if there was more to this man that what he was claiming. As he spoke, he mentioned of expanding his territory and influence around him, and battle other lords who claimed those lands for themselves.
Nodding his head, Mao spoke. "It is indeed a Lord's job to protect his people from harm, and so I must ask another question, and do not take it as insubordination." He glared hard at Biao, unflinching as he spoke. "If the disease is the Han itself, what would you do? From what I understand, the Emperor is controlled by two men, and these men abuse the power that has been given them. Many Lords turned against Dong Zhou when he started to do the same, even though by rights he should have been protected for he was serving the Han government. Would you do the same should you find these men abusing their power, and thus bring shame to the name of the Han and destroying the people? Or do you believe only in the image?"
It was perhaps an unfair question and perhaps somewhat intangible. But Liu Biao was claiming that he wished to preserve the Han, yet he served the people. If the Han was not protecting the people, was it not the people's job to turn against the Han? Obviously that route was a dangerous one, and both Zhang Jiao and Dong Zhou had paid with their lives for deviating from it. Though of course many could argue that maybe Zhang Jiao would have done great things for the people had he not died from sickness.

The Darkstar entered the room and out of habit began taking note of every potential weakness that could be exploited in case things turned ugly. Which guard to take out first, height of the windows from the ground and their apparent strength, amount of manpower and weapons in the room, etc. Many lords wished to aquire the services or loyalty of mercenaries these days, and those that are unable to aquire those services seem more and more to wish to prevent any others from aquiring them. Because of this the Darkstar and his friends had been attacked on multiple occasions for refusing to serve certain lords, and it is because of this that he has taken up the habit of always knowing the best path for escape.
It is surprising that we were allowed to keep our weapons, he thought to himself, It is a surprising show of faith, stupidity, or pride from the reigning lord. Upon actually seeing and listening to Liu Biao, the Darkstar concluded that it was probably a mixture of faith and pride, though stupidity could be hiding under a well designed facade.
Staying a few paces behind and to the right of his giant comrade, the Darkstar kept his silence. Mao posed a very interesting question, one which he hoped their prospective lord could answer or evade well, as the Darkstar respected dishonest men just as much as honest ones purely on their skills of showmanship. Mao, must you always attempt to stump each passing lord with near-impossible questions? Darkstar thought to himself, boredom making his thoughts more and more critical.

Liu Biao paused to shake his head it was an impossible question indeed. Either he would be allowing the Emperor to be abused by traitors or he would be leading the people to hard by marching to war. He was basically admitting to being in some manner flawed no matter what answer he gave to Sima Mao, which he was sure the man was all too aware of course. However his question seemed assumed he did things in the same brutal efficient way of the others lord and with the same goals of power in mind. He could not deny that his course of action would also cause some hard, this was not a perfect world and he did not pretend to be perfect himself. Still given the choice he would chose the lesser of two evils if the alternative was to sit back and do nothing. Perhaps they just expected him to lie, well he would not do so he wanted men to follow him because of who he was not who to pretended. Even if the men turned and left him as a result it was who he was he would accept the consequences.
"A difficult but honest question Sima Mao, brave man had avoided asking me as much before." Liu Biao said thinking of how best to answer after all they did not have his insight into affairs at the imperial court.
"It is possible that the Han has become weak. However the current Emperor Liu Xian has never even be given a chance to rule. He was put on the throne by Dong Zhuo over his brothers still warm corpse. He has been abused and betrayed and he deserves the chance to heal this land, i would give it to him." Liu Biao said, he knew why Sima Mao might blame the Han. After all in the recent past there had been weak emperors but they had been mislead by corrupt advisers. He could only hope the people would not blame the Han, he would try and make it for it personally.
"If this is indeed the case i would free the Emperor from his tormentors i would make war on the unjust and evil. However i would not do it for reward or personal rule of the land. I will accept whatever position the Emperor wishes to offer me that is all. Also i would recommend to him those that would serve me as loyal subjects to the Han. I accept this course of action will bring chaos to the people also, that is not my wish but its unavoidable. I can only say i will offer what aid i can to them and hope they forgive me when they see the benefit of the order i intend to bring. While other lords may see the people as pawns in there plans i see them as innocents who we should try and protect but not at the cost of allowing this chaos to continue and greater damage in the long run." Liu Biao finished not able to think of anything else to expand his point. He would try and help those he could he was already welcoming refugees fleeing other provinces.

Liu Biao’s words echoed in the chamber, either inspiring or boring to those whose ears they fell on. There was a moment of silence, short and sweet, while those present digested this response. The words were honest in meaning and presentation, stirring emotion in several present, but not enough to be noticeable. These are warriors, after all. However, that poignant silence only lasted a fraction of time, before something unexpected broke through.
Clapping.
Heads turned, seeking out the source of this upheaval, only to land on a diminutive figure not noticed before. It was a man, of undeterminable age, clothed in barbaric looking black leather. His appearance was at odds with the surrounding sophistication, yet he appeared un-phased. His posture was poor, shoulders curled and a slight hunch in his back, bringing to mind images of someone less fortunate. However, this mans eyes were clearly visible, and they lacked all forms of lust and desire. The icy orbs were piercing those of Liu Biao’s as his hands ceased their disruption. There was a childlike presence in them, something youthful and energetic, but the little bit of skin left uncovered by his black hood looked much tougher, leaving all presumptions just that.
[Black]“Beautiful words are merely decadent morsels to the ears, as is food to the tongue… Deliciously appealing and sometimes filling, but altogether unimportant in their uniqueness… There is always something else that could serve the purpose. In this case, that is action.”[/Black]
The words were spoken with enough volume to reach the Lord’s ears from his vantage point behind the Darkstar and the guards. His voice was just as perplexing as his appearance, but is it hardly a surprise? It sounded something similar to a dying animal mixed with a musical instrument; sinister and indecipherable, yet melodically southing all the same.
His presence would obviously bring curiosity to how he was even standing there to begin with, but that was just as quickly satisfied as well. Almost as if he was reading their minds, but that’d be impossible. Right? [Black]“Shall we skip these verbal flirtations and cut to the chase? My two friends and I would like to try you out, much like a horse, before making a permanent arrangement.”[/Black] The words fell from lips curled up into a heinous smile, yet his posture remained unchanged and unthreatening. Was this man psychotic? [Black]“As of course, you’d be doing as well.”[/Black]
Finally, it appeared the strange man was finished bringing attention to himself; his hands recoiled from sight finding some home inside his tattered robes. His head bowed shielding his face with his black leather hood, as if falling asleep, which perhaps wasn’t such a nonsensical conclusion based on his behavior.

He blinked it was nice to get an applause every once and a while but it was not what he expected. He looked past Sima Mao and Darkstar to see another man had entered the room or at least the corridor outside. His guards had long ceased bothering to close the door with all the current activity it was simple futile. His appearance was almost like that of a mad man but was totally at odd with his words which were clever if not wise. After all he he had to admit to himself at least he would ask the same. It would be easy for any lord to claim to want to help the people and the imperial court when really there goal was simple power. Actions spoke louder than words it was said and they would be correct to doubt the honest intentions of any lord in these times. Another more arrogant lord might even have taken there words as insolence but let them pass they did not know him yet after all. Besides which he was correct in that he did not know them either, he did not want to promote men of poor character anymore than they wanted to serve one.
"Indeed, i cannot expect you to be swayed to simple words. I ask that you all would give me a chance to prove i mean what i say. If you find me unworthy as a lord you are free to leave my side. Of course, i must ask the same not every warrior who turns up on my doorstep is as honest and brave as i hope you 3 are." Liu Biao said taking a moment to flick his eyes over all three men. They all looked so different like they came from vastly different places and background he wondered what the connection was between them. He realized he had forgotten the ask the man an important question, understandable really his guards would normal have inquired for him.
"I believe you have me at a disadvantage, you know my name but i don't know yours?" He asked returning the mans intense stair with equal undiminished interest and palpable excitement. Was i possible he had found a gem today that the rest of the world had passed over. His guardsmen stepped aside to allow him to enter the Audience chamber although it was becoming rather full more like a council chamber.

No response.
The man remained silent and unmoving for several moments, resembling a mummified demon, or something otherworldly. The silence was palpable with all the bystanders waiting, some impatiently, for the man to respond to their lord. The level of social rudeness was reaching an apex for many. His two companions, however, would most likely be quite accustomed to this behavior. Just when one of the guards was about to intervene, something strange happened. Surprising? Not really, but disturbing all the same.
[Black]“Ssssssssssssss…”[/Black] The sound literally slithered from his lips as if a snake were climbing out of his throat. His head tilted back, revealing not the crystal blue eyes from before, but instead whiteness. It would appear he was in some kind of trance, or quite possibly having a stroke. Either way, it caused the guards to make an unconscious change in posture, subconsciously trying to get away from the insanity. Then, as abruptly as it started, it stopped. Icy blue eyes, raging like a snowstorm, now controlled the room with their gaze, leveling on the Lord Liu Biao again. His lips barely moved as he spoke.
[Black]“Names are as frivolous as words, and have no purpose towards the greater good. People believe their names will live forever, but names die with their mortal form. No name nor action is unforgettable, and as such, are naive aspirations.”[/Black]
The crazed man took a step forward, having noticed his path unobstructed by the guards no longer. His steps were wobbly, like a newborn infant, but strangely calculated. Was this all an elaborate charade, and the man a master marionette? Perhaps, or maybe there is some realism to the madness. Once he reached the left side of Mao the man stopped, perfectly in line, before speaking once more. This time, his voice was more whimsical than harsh, reflecting the childishness that leaked into his actions occasionally.
[Black]“However, should you need to address me, you may call me… Nefarious.”[/Black]

Anyone would be a little taken aback by such bizarre behaviour or perhaps more than a little taken aback. He cocked his head after a moment looking at this strange man like he could see threw the deep hood the man was wearing. He wondered if the man really had fallen asleep for a moment. After what he already witnessed today which was far from the norm it would not surprise him if the next man that came through the door starting shooting birds out of their mouth. Still it did not really matter what someone was like if they had the talent to restore order and law under the Han dynasty.
“Then I am glad to meet you gentlemen and I hope you will join me in my quest.” Liu Biao said looking at all three of them. He knew he would be able to give them a chance to show him what they could do soon enough. He who stood still fell behind and he had much to do in a short time.
He stood and walked down to stand in front of the three men, he was tired from sitting down day and he was a humble man he did not require of wish people to worship him exactly. He crossed his arms looking from them to Gao Shun, Gan Ning and Shen Fei. Quite a gathering he thought and the world would soon hear of their deeds. He stroked the bottom of his short beard with a finger and once again decided to shave it all off as soon as possible.

The Darkstar looked back and forth between the Butcher and Nefarious, nodding to each of them after a moment of eye contact. After looking back to Liu Biao and taking one final assessment, the man stepped foward.
"We have not previously been introduced, I am known only by the title of Darkstar, as that is the only name the world knows. I speak for both of my companions in declaring that we are in fact willing to serve you as our lord. I would urge you not to let our specific talents go to waste, as we each bring a very specific set of skills to your service. We three have lived almost our entire lives serving the highest bidder, or doing the bidding of those who claimed to own us. Our codes would dictate that we will never betray you or your officers, but should the opposite be true we do not forgive." The Darkstar bowed his head slightly, he had learned all the proper mannerisms that were required around the upper class, but was never very good at applying them to the right situations. Most lords would have required he be on his knees, but he seemed to feel that a simple nod of the head was sufficient.
"I hereby give you my pledge of loyalty, a pledge that will not be broken unless you or your subordinates prove in some manner to be unworthy of our services. We are fickle by nature, and while we may appear to be blunt untrustworthy, I swear to you on my reputation that you will never have to fear our blades. This is my pledge, and I will keep it."
(Just moving things forward here, you can consider us accepted into your ranks now or we can continue the conversation just for kicks. The others might have a little more to add to this, but for all intents and purposes we're in your army now, haha.)

The Butcher looked between his two 'companions', both to either side of himself. For some reason he could not decern, it seemed that out of all three of them, he came off as the sanest, which was scary in it's own way. He had growled when final third companion had entered the room in his usual form of showmanship and bravado. He had tried the same stunt with Star and himself when they first met, but the two had not been very impressed, mainly cause they almost ran him through as well before he started going on about how he was rescueing them. Mao had almost done it anyways before Dao told him to allow it to play out. In the end the three decided it was best to settle down, and kill people legally. Hence why they were now all standing in front of Liu Biao. The irony was, of course, that all three were criminals, yet they were coming to serve perhaps the most saintly of current warlords. Somethings were just amusing.
As the man who styled himself Nefarious tried to intimidate Liu Biao and the guards, Mao retreated into his own thoughts. For he could only wonder if Biao would truly go through with what he said, if he felt just reason, or if it was only for show, very much like the man to his left. Yet, in either case, Sima Mao truly did not care. He was not some man who stole from the rich to give to the poor, he stole from anyone to give to himself. It was the way of the world, and it was a cruel world to belong to, yet it was better than not existing at all, right? In any case, this conversation would soon bring itself to a close, either by Biao ordering the execution of all three, or because Mao would get tired of Nefarious' ramblings and kill the skinny man.
When he uttered his rather comedic name, Mao let out a soft grunt of amusement. "I personally call him Xiguan^, far more funny, and entirely more accurate." He glanced down at the man with a smile on his face, he was, after all, a bully. Of course, he was not the type of bully who would quite when others stood up to him, he was the kind that enjoyed those type of people. Yet his head snapped back around when Star started talking to Biao, informing him that the three would indeed be willing to serve under Biao, and they would hold to not betray him. While true words, they were also quite strong to be coming from three mercenaries. Sima Mao tilted his head with a smile at Biao. "So my Lord, do you have any tasks you would like us to perform?"

A rumor that someone was trying to restore the Han to it formal glory that is all he was going on. He heard that a Lord named Liu Biao was gather troops to reclaim the former glory of the Han and restore the emperor to his former glory. This seemed like a man that Teng Po could serve. The road that he took to get here was a strange one for him, from the mountains of his home to the swamps and wetlands of this area it seemed like he was not in china anymore. however he and his men would not stop till they reached the place that he wanted to be. He finally caught a glimpse of Xiang Yang and knew that he would soon find his lord. He had his troops make camp at the edge of the city and went alone into the Xiang Yang.
The city was bigger then most of the towns he had stopped at along the way and was busy, the cityfolk living out there lives without a care and not paying Teng Po even the slightest care. He continued and finally found the Palace. It itself was a marvel to him. He arrived at the front gate and spoke with one of the guards that was stationed there.
"Hello there, my name is Teng Po Lie. If you would be so kind to tell your lord that I wish have an audience with him I would be most grateful.
Teng Po stood there waiting for the guard to allow him entrance into the palace.
