Battle, something that comes naturally to the human race but for someone who has never participated or studied "war" it could provide a little more devious then it sounds, its not all just people running at eachother with weapons. Here in this thread i will give you as much information as possible to send you on your way against your foes. Things of course are very unique to this site, however a small education in warfare couldn't hurt right? Intro Here are some rules or guidelines i would advice you to go through before evening considering going to war. - Is it worth it?
You don't really want to go into a wasteful or pointless war, it'll cost you alot plus it probably isn't worth it.
- Is it possible?
Do you have enough men, skill or space to seize what you want.
- High chance of success?
Once again, no point in going to war if you can't win - unless defending of course.
- Majority of support from officers and civillians?
If your soldiers, civillians or officers don't support you, you can't expect to come out victorious. Having the favour of the people often means having the favour of the battle.
- Is there another way to solve the conflict?
Sometimes negotiation is alot cleaner then war and it isn't as wasteful or maybe just an assassination.. whatever your style war isn't always the answer.
Obviously there are plentiful more factors that come into play before starting a war however i will only brush upon a few.. this guide was not created to make you a God of War but merely to inform you of the indepth and strategy required in and out of war.

Cao Cao's Top Rules
1. Think it through completely
If your plan is completely unrealistic or the odds are completely stacked against you, its probably not worth it. A victory is a victory however at what cost? Is it worth losing 10,000 men merely to capture another town? This involves tactics on the battlefield aswell, if the wind is blowing against your army and you launch a fire attack closely, don't come crying to me when your ranks are set in a spiralling inferno.
2. Keep things realistic and within reason
Don't expect to run into the middle of a battlefield and use your "musou", this isn't Dynasty Warriors. The closer your plans are to realism the more likely they are going to work, of course within reason once more.. it only depends how they are perfected.
3. Succession Rate
Is this plan really going to work? Do you have a back-up plan if it doesn't? I would consider yourself screwed if you didn't have a plan b. Your enemy is only as easy as you make him, if you have several tactics awaiting his demise that are well planned then you can expect he has much the same for you. Is it obvious? Clearly if you have your troops moving all over the place he is going to predict something, much like if your troops aren't moving at all there is probably something up too. Think logically! Outsmart and know your enemy.
4. Weaknesses & Strengths
The enviroment around you will lead to great victories, using the enviroment against your enemy. Clearly if hes invading your lands you will know these places better and will have the upper hand, be prepared for them.. evaluate yourself as much as your enemy also clearly you have weaknesses as much as he does. You both will have strengths and weaknesses ensure that you make his weaknesses wide and open and strike them as strong as possible, whilst concealing or protecting your own.

Troops
The men and women who die for your cause and others are clearly a key factor in battles, victories or losses will be provides by these. Numbers do help, however as proven in the battles of Yellow Turbans, Chibi, Hefei and Guandu numbers clearly can be overcome. Its all about how you use the troops rather then how many you have, all the troops have different strengths and weaknesses for example horsemen are amazing against archers, yet weak against spearmen.
The first thing i would recommend is not be worried about large forces of units, though the enemy may be fast in numbers, is his army as elite or as disciplined as yours? Its alot harder to control a wider army without several generals aswell as feeding and tending to all of the men. Clearly a concentrated force may be outnumbered however with the right leadership there is a chance for victory. Now that i've said that this does not mean entering a battle with a tiny force will win you the battle, once more it is up to you and your leadership to provide victories.
All troops will eventually reach their limits, you cannot expect to march your armies all over China and then fighting a war. Men will break and die or even flee if retreated poorly. One significant event in a battle can change the outcome of all things and therefore troops are the fuel of battles, burn to fast and you'll run out quickly, burn to slow and find yourself overrun immediately.

Terrain
The way the land is shaped provides an excellent way of gaining an advantage over your enemy. The terrain of the battle map can assist completely, say if your archers are up high in a mountain and the enemy forces are unable to reach them you already have an advantage over them. Terrain however also provides moving speeds, obviously your not going to move as fast when moving through rivers then when your or firm well made roads. You need to take into mind your horses that are charging on the sand won't have the best impact and perhaps its not worth it in the long run.
This provides common sense coming into play, coming downhill provides momentum. Catching troops climbing uphill with your calvary charge would prove to be perfect with the troops already been slowed and struggling due to the height and steepness and your calvary being launched down the hill provided with great speed and force crushing any in their path. Terrain should be used correctly if you wish to conquer and it should be acknowledged that it is a very important part of the battle.

Morale
The willpower and spririts of your men to continue to fight. Morale will provide your men with the fuel themselves to fight mentally. If they aren't in the fight and have no real reason to be there, don't expect them to fight a good fight. If they are scared, hungry, tired or even close to death then they will lack morale. Morale can be raised and dropped in a number of ways.
The basic ways of course for raising morale, dealing plentiful of damage to the enemy would secure good morale, watching the enemy suffer and flee aswell as insulting the enemy or rallying your men. Grand feasts or drinking before battles would raise the spirits of men aswell as music, women and much more "treats". However all come at their own expences and don't expect your hungover men to be much of a fight.
Losing morale or damaging morale against your opponent, insulting them or suffering alot of damage, sabotaging or capturing someone or something of significance to them, straving them whether it be by capturing their supply lines, supply depot or merely by making them work too hard without rest. Outnumbering the enemy or making the enemy fear you will also lower their morale.
