It is now the summer of 184AD, throughout the land rays of light emit from the ever growing darkness. The Yellow Turban Rebellion has been met with great difficulties as mighty heroes have rose and brought about the fall of their cause. This deals with two of those heroes, Dong Ping and Zhang Qin.
The man who had visited Dong Ping was none other than his sworn brother Zhang Qin, after the ritual greetings Ping, asked his purpose in coming, Zhang replied, "Prefect Guo Hia has sent me with ten thousand men to take the fight to the rebel leader Zhang Jue alongside the rest of the converging Imperial troops. I come in hopes that you would join us in serving the dynasty." Dong Ping replied enthusiatically, "I shall request permission to lead the army of Yan in support, and join you brother." The two celebrated their reunion into the night.
The next morning Dong Ping led Zhang Qin before the Imperial Protector Liang De in court. Prostrating himself and introducing Zhang Qin, Dong Ping announced his intention, "This brother of mine, Zhang Qin, the Provincial Commander of Qingzhou visited me last night and said the Imperial troops are converging on Jizhou to subjugate the rebel leader Zhang Jue. He leads ten thousand men on orders of Prefect Guo Hia. I request the same number of our forces and I will help destroy the Turbans." Protector Liang pointed at Zhang Qin and said, "Are you the one known as the Featherless Arrow?" Zhang Qin bowed and replied, "I am indeed."
Protector Liang stepped down from the dais and bowed to the Commander, who returned the salutation. Just then an Imperial envoy was announced bearing an Imperial order. The officials and officers stepped down from their seats and knelt as they heard the sacred instruction, which ordered Protector Liang to join Imperial Commanders Lu Zhi, Huangfu Song and Zhu Jun in wiping out the remnants of the Yellow Turban rebels in Jizhou. Portector Liang bowed and respectfully accepted the order hailing His Majesty. The envoy swiftly left to spread the order further.
Resuming court the Protector said to Dong Ping, "With that I can meet your request for troops, go forth with Commander Zhang and win honours for your country." Dong bowed in respect and the Protector promoted him to Commander and assigned him his requested army.
On the morrow Commanders Dong Ping and Zhang Qin bade Imperial Protector Liang farewell and set out with their twenty thousand men to rendezvous in Ji with the Imperial armies.
Crossing the Yellow River and coming to Nanpi they encountered a rebel horde of fifty thousand under Zhang Liang, the two lines formed and the opposing Commanders rode out to meet. Zhang Liang seeing Zhang Qin fumed, Zhang Qin noticing the rebel leader's hatred laughed and said, "With eighty thousand you attacked Dongchang, and failed, now with fifty thousand against a much more disciplined and sizable force you dare to oppose? Laughable!" Zhang Liang was about to order his army to charge when a stone pinged against his helmet, unnerved he led his multitude of rebels in a swift retreat to Ye, abandoning Nanpi. Zhang Qin and Dong Ping pursued taking a heavy toll on the Turbans. They soon called off the pursuit and returned to Nanpi, where they reassured the population and settled their armies outside the city, ready for the march onto the rebel home ground in Ye.
Zhang Liang fled for his life to the capital of Jizhou, Ye where he was met by Zhang Jue and Zhang Bao,he explained his defeat and the three prepared for a united defence of the seat of their fruitless rebellion.
The next day at Nanpi the arrival of Imperial Commander Lu Zhi was announced, he was surprised to find the city already back under Han authority. Meeting the two victorious commanders with high favour; the three planned to march on Ye the next day.
In Ye, the armies of Huangfu Song and Zhu Jun struck out on the southern positions overwhelming rebel outposts and towns which surrendered to the dynasty. The two Commanders attacked the city of Ye from the west and south, and Zhang Liang rode out to confront them, the two sides battled from morning to noon without a clear victor.
From the north and east Lu Zhi, leading Dong Ping and Zhang Qin attacked, also reaching the city Zhang Bao rode out to confront them while Zhang Jue maintained his hold on the city with his massed followers.
Zhang Bao berated Lu Zhi and the Emperor roundly, then seeing Dong Ping and Zhang Qin's menacing glare he thought about continuing but instead sent two commanders into the field to confront each Zhang and Dong. The four commanders fought mightily until Dong and Zhang each hit their mark and killed both of their contenders.
Dong Ping charged from the right and Zhang Qin charged from the left without an order from Lu Zhi and with a hundred cavalry each made for Zhang Bao, who taken by surprise was overrun and consequently killed in the vicious charge. His followers fled into the city and reported to Zhang Jue, who so disheartened and overcome with remourse by the loss of his brother, fainted.
Battling Huangfu Song and Zhu Jun proved fruitless Zhang Liang fled back into the city after another day of fighting, heading to report to Zhang Jue he was shocked to find his brother dead. Grief and sorrow pierced Zhang Liang's heart and in the midst of his wailing it was reported that the Han troops had broken through the gate (rebels had surrendered the gate knowing their master was dead). Huangfu Song charged into the yamen, killed Zhang Liang without a word and mutilated the corpse of Zhang Jue.
The city was pacified and Han authority was once again restored.
To make a long story short, the armies were rewarded and each participating officer was promoted according to their merit. We all know what became of the three Imperial Commander Huangfu Song, Lu Zhi and Zhu Jun. Dong Ping was promoted to Commander in Chief of Yanzhou, and Zhang Qin was given the same title in Qingzhou, in recognition of their service.
