Preparing to March The sun was high, the breeze ever so slight, yet a great presence and carried the sweet fragrance of the exotic flowers of the city from the marketplace and surroundings. Guan seated on the command platform surveying the army of Liu Bei was exhilirated, calmly closing his eyes he absorbed the sounds of nature and the city peoples as one, the soldiers stood like still life figures too respecting the natural flow. After a while Guan stood mightily and arms clasped behind him surveyed the soldiers stood in their ranks and various battalions. To his left stood Zhang Qin and to his right Yang Zhi. Guan nodded slightly to Yang Zhi who waved a command flag, issuing the order for the army to shift formation. It did so smoothly in a few moments. Guan was satisfied, the army was well equipped and rested, ready for the march, he had but to wait for the order. Guan walked forward down the stairs to the command platform his green cape trailing in the breeze. As he reached the foot of the stairs a messenger arrived bearing Lord Liu Bei's instruction. Guan read through the missive and told the messenger to speed back and report that they would be there shortly. The messenger rode off returning to Luoyang. Bearing the letter in his hand Guan Yu called over Yang Zhi, showed him the contents and told him to ready the necessary units. Zhi got to it right away. While Guan Yu marshalled his personal command. * * * Soon after the necessary armies were grouped and ready for deployment. Yang Zhi on behalf of Liu Bei was to lead the following: Guan Yu himself had marshalled: Zhang Qin would join Guan Yu's unit. Dong Ping would remain to defend Liu Bei's territory with Lin Chong with the rest of the army. The units were supplied with rations and the wagons were loaded with food, water and wine. Each unit looked imposing and was ready for the trek north.

Yen Shin marched forth with his troops into the Barracks of Yong An. The four thousand men, lined up in an impressive display of organization, entered the grounds and were sent off to their duties by their sergeants. Yen Shin himself thought all the running and preparing of the troops seemed odd for a normal day of drills.
Nonetheless, he moved on to meet with Guan Yu himself. Upon finding the giant man, he gave him a salute from atop the horse, trying to look as much a military commander as it was possible for a bureaucrat. "Upon orders from Lord Lin Chong, I present myself to your command, General Guan Yu. My name is Yen Shin of He Nei, and I have recently joined the service of Lord Liu Bei Xuande. I assume I am to take charge of the daily drills of my men?"

Guan Yu was about to set out for Chang'an when the newcomer was announced and presented himself. Guan heard Yen Shin out sitting atop his steed Guan clasped his hands as he replied, "A pleasure to meet you Yen Shin. We have never met, how did you come to recognise me on sight?" Guan led his horse closer to Yen and continued, "I am about to leave for Luoyang to meet with Lord Liu, the rebel Li Jue is to be put down by the lords of the realm."
Guan continued on after a brief pause and decalred, "Sitting idle here does not befit a general, perhaps you will consider leading your army with me to the north? Where you can aquire yourself some merit, as well as meet Lord Liu?" Guan was ready to march at the given moment, he merely waited for the man's reply.

Shock and honour overcame Yen Shin as the invitation was extended to him to lead troops beside Guan Yu to battle the rebel Li Jue. And more, it would be the opportunity for him to meet Liu Bei, at long last. Perhaps that would give him the accomplishment that he seeked.
It is not hard to find the Lord Guan Yu. The rumours and legends of your figure are quite accurate. Yen Shin laughed so as to give his comment a relaxed sense. And it would be my honour to follow your lordship to battle. Yen Shin then proceeded to call upon his captains and give them orders to spread to the troops. In but a few minutes, the men had been mustered, and an army had formed under the command of the man from He Nei.
He did not understand what it was that had earned him such honour, but he did not question orders. "Captain!" A man came to him quickly, mounted on a light horse and dressed as a Scout. "Gather my armour, weapons and my servants. We march to war!" The troops cheered as Yen Shin marched on to Lord Guan Yu. "The men, and I, are ready to follow you, my lord." He gave a short salute from atop Nightsong and lifted his war fan, giving the sign that they were soon to march.

To Yen Shin's replies Guan laughed happily and stroked his beard, he was a man who liked to be known by many, which made him take a liking to Yen right away. Guan waited for Yen's battalion to get in formation and said, "We make our way up to the capital now, let us both achieve great things in battle!"
Guan led the march at that moment.
Guan Yu, Yang Zhi, Yen Shin and Zhang Qin have departed for Luoyang!
