As he grew up in the shadow of his older brother, Yan Mao spent more time with the servants in the estate, and as he got older spent time with the commoners living under his family's rule. Until a certain night, when cries filled the night sky. Yan Mao awoke from his sleep, to find the town he had spent the night in, set ablaze by unknown attackers. Too late to rally the townpeople, Mao got to his horse and rode as quickly as he could to their estate, only to find it already burned to the ground.
Yan Mao found out the attacker calls himself 'the Crimson', whom he has a history with. He now thoroughly hates this man, and has been hunting him for three years. The Crimson's rogue army always staying a step ahead of Yan Mao's force.
To Yan Mao's knowledge, noone of his family survived, yet there has never been any evidence that they all died either.
His biggest chance at beating 'the Crimson' was about a year ago, when he caught up with him on the outskirts of Luo Yang region. They battled for several bouts, ending when the Crimson cut Yan Mao's right cheek, leaving the scar he has. It is a constant source of hate for Yan Mao.

'The Crimson' is in fact his brother Yan Fu, who got jealous over Yan Mao's status, and feared he may take over his land.
